When water dissolves minerals while passing through bedrock, it can result in high mineral content known as hard water. The two most common minerals found in hard water are calcium and magnesium. The buildup caused by hard water can leave residues on plumbing, appliances, shower glass, dishes, hair, and hands. Additionally, hard water can increase the cost of heating water, cause clogs in pipes, and reduce the lifespan of appliances, which may also void their warranty. The water heater is similarly affected by hard water buildup.
